Common bathtub types

Contrary to what many people think, choosing the right bathtub can be a complex process and depends on many factors, including bathroom structure and space, which bathtub design is most functional, what is the ideal level of comfort, and what styles and colors work best for you the rest of the bathroom. Read on to learn more about the different tubs available today and the variations of each so you can make the right decision for your project.

alcove bathtub

Alcove tubs are one of the cheapest and easiest types of tubs to install by trade professionals. These classic tubs are perfect for the bathroom's three small walls and are usually placed near the shower or toilet to optimize bathroom space. We offer alcove bathtubs in many different sizes, shapes, materials and colors that are anything but ordinary.

Alcove bathtubs are also the most common type of bathtub in homes today because they are very space-saving and work well in small bathrooms. Ideal for apartment, townhouse or condo bathrooms, alcove tubs are an easy and affordable option for bathroom remodels that allow you to save money and allocate more of your budget to other exciting aspects of your bathroom remodel.

Alcove bathtubs are made of high-quality materials and are expected to last for decades, including porcelain, fiberglass and steel. Whether your current alcove tub is malfunctioning, the faucet is leaking, or you just want to upgrade to a new look, our alcove tubs can meet your every need without breaking the bank.

corner bathtub

The pentagonal corner bathtub brings a luxurious upgrade to the bathroom. Whether sitting under a beautiful new bathroom window, or used as an active way to liven up a boring corner of an old bathroom, corner tubs create a tranquil spa setting that can transform any bathroom into a peaceful place. Sometimes just a corner tub with a jacuzzi can transform a bathroom from a dull place to a relaxing, therapeutic retreat.

claw foot tub

Claw foot tubs are freestanding tubs identified by their gold, silver or bronze feet and external plumbing. Claw foot tubs are often a more expensive option for bathroom remodeling projects, but they offer a level of sophistication and freedom that few other tub models offer. At BBBC, we pride ourselves on making traditional luxury affordable for the modern homeowner, especially when it comes to our impressive claw-foot tubs.

For many, clawfoot tubs remind them of old-fashioned bathtubs from classic and medieval movies, often decorated with beautiful silver or gold clawfoot features. Today's claw-foot tubs offer a modern take on vintage tubs for those who prefer a classic yet sophisticated style of bathroom remodeling.

independent

Freestanding bathtubs without claw feet are a less common type of bathtub, but an interesting option for those who want to test the boundaries of traditional bathrooms and make a bold statement. A large oval, round or rectangular bowl with an installed faucet or external plumbing like the one found on a claw foot tub, a freestanding tub is a modern and comfortable option.

Looking for a modern but unconventional bathroom makeover? A freestanding bathtub is a good option. Like claw-foot tubs, they offer a sense of sophistication and freedom of movement that alcoves and corner tubs don't, making them a fun design element that can be moved and rearranged as needed.

bathtub hardware

Wash in style with bathtub hardware that matches your tub perfectly. The type of hardware can make regular bathing routines more relaxing and rejuvenating. And, when you're in a hurry or want to bathe your kids, the right hardware can make the job easier and faster. The hardware comes in a variety of materials and colors, making it easy to keep the style and design of the bathroom consistent in every detail.

wall mounted

The wall-mounted hardware is perfect for an alcove bathtub that can also be used as a shower. This hardware is traditionally mounted on the wall in three different places: high on the shower head, mid-to-low on the temperature control handle, and at the bottom of the spout that fills the tub (closest to the tub).

bathtub wall mounted

This tub wall mount is designed for tubs not combined with a shower, allowing the hardware to be taken out of the tub and mounted on the wall. It usually includes the same elements as a traditional wall mount: a hand-held sprayer, a temperature-controlled handle, and a nozzle that directly fills the tub.

Bath Deck Installation

Another option for a tub without a shower is to mount the hardware directly on the tub itself. This type of hardware installs directly in the tub for quick and easy access. This is a great option for freestanding and claw tubs with edges wide enough to support the plumbing.

Detached

Freestanding hardware can be moved around the bathroom and is perfect for claw and freestanding tubs. These are simple hook-up plumbing fixtures that can provide updated and modern conveniences to otherwise classic-looking tubs.

How to choose a bathtub

A bathtub is one of those permanent fixtures that is often used in every home and should always be reliable. When choosing a new bathtub, be sure to choose the one that fits your needs, space and installation requirements. Whether you're looking to outfit your children's bathroom with a bathtub and shower, or give your master bathroom a luxurious spa experience, it's important to choose the bathtub that suits your needs. However, before choosing the style of your bathtub, you need to figure out what suits your bathroom and which type will meet your installation requirements.

What size bathtub do you need?

The first step is to determine the dimensions of the tub space. You need to know how much space is available and where the dedicated plumbing for the tub and shower is. Measure the width and length, whether it's from wall to wall, or just the floor space where you want your tub to sit.

Once you know the size and relative placement of the areas you have to use, you can start to understand what size tub or shower you can look for. While most sizes in your search refer to the length of the tub, you need to consider the length, width, and height (also known as depth) of the tub. The standard size for an alcove or tub is 60 inches in length, but sizes vary from 50 inches to over 79 inches from end to end. Soaking tubs or walk-in tubs can be as narrow as 30 inches from end to end to fit into smaller spaces.

What type of bathing experience are you looking for?

Soaking: The most common type of tub, soaking tubs provide a tranquil experience without the need for additional spa techniques.
Massage Bathtub: Also known as a Jacuzzi, whirlpool tubs have water jets near major muscle groups for intense water massage.
Combination: Combination tubs offer all the features of a whirlpool and air tub, so you can choose your experience every time you bathe.

complete your bathtub

Bathroom designs are completely custom and unique to each home, so with most bathtub purchases, you'll need to plan individually to select the additional necessary elements. For example, a bathtub requires a bathtub faucet. Some configurations will allow for bathtub faucets and shower heads, either wall mounted or mounted on the bathtub as a hand shower. Depending on the design of your bathing area, additional bathing accessories such as overflow drains or body sprays are also available. When planning a bathroom remodel, safety precautions, such as grab bars, should also be considered. If the new tub is part of a full remodel, there are plenty of bathroom vanities, sinks, and accessory packs to choose from, as well as bathroom storage options.
